The 7-Fold Tie: Why Fewer Layers Mean Finer Craftsmanship

The 7-Fold Tie: Why Fewer Layers Mean Finer Craftsmanship

Every Sette necktie begins with a number: seven. It's in our name, and it's in the construction of our finest ties. But what does "7-fold" actually mean, and why should it matter to you when you're choosing a tie?

Most neckties on the market today are built around an interlining, a strip of stiff material sewn inside the silk shell to give the tie body and help it hold its knot. It's an efficient, low-cost way to manufacture a tie at scale, and there is nothing wrong with it. But it is not how the finest ties in the world have historically been made.

What "7-Fold" Really Means

A true seven-fold tie is cut from a single, generous piece of silk and folded in on itself seven times, with no interlining at all. The weight, structure, and drape of the tie come entirely from the silk itself. This requires nearly double the fabric of a standard tie and considerably more skill from the hands folding it, since there is no interlining to hide an uneven fold or a sloppy seam.

The result is a tie with a heft and a roll that interlined ties simply cannot replicate. It knots with a soft, substantial drape, resists wrinkling because the silk can breathe, and often outlives the person who bought it.

Why We Build This Way

Sette was founded on the idea that a necktie should be a small, wearable piece of craftsmanship, not an afterthought. Every 7-fold construction we offer is woven and finished by mills in Como, Italy, the same region that has supplied silk to the world's most storied tailoring houses for generations. No tags or labels are sewn on after the fact. All product information is woven directly into the silk.

How to Tell the Difference

Next time you're shopping for a tie, feel the tip. An interlined tie will feel light and slightly hollow. A 7-fold tie will feel dense and fall with real weight when you let it hang. Look at the back seam, too. On a 7-fold tie, the folds of silk are visible and finished by hand rather than concealed behind a lining.
